I am excited to announce this latest integration! It turns out Google Voice and Jolly Roger Telephone go VERY well together.
If you are a Google Voice (or Google Fi) user, you should have a Jolly Roger Pirate protecting your service. When telemarketers call you, Jolly Roger Telephone will automatically intercept the call, chat with the telemarketer, and send you the audio. However, as you know, telemarketers spoof their caller-ids all the time. So if a telemarketer gets past me and you answer, you can press star and a Jolly Roger bot will come on the line and chat with them. You can listen in, or just hang up and the bot will keep them engaged. Never be frustrated with telemarketing again!
Full details are at this link. Works for Google Voice and Google Fi. Same instructions
Thank you to all of you!
Sounds cool yet setup does sound complicated. I am curious how to make telemarketer calls easier to connect to your bots. I do not have mobile but I do have 3 Google Voice numbers and we do get a fair amount of telemarketer calls. Can it work for me somehow?
I followed the directions and the GV bot is set up perfectly. Granted, there are a few steps but it’s a one-time process.
To keep the bot from having to preview every call, I set up Google Voice to NOT ring Jolly Roger for any calls from my Google contacts ( click the “Edit” button and uncheck the bot phone # at https://www.google.com/voice/b/1#groups/all_contacts for “All Contacts”), but to ring the bot for all other numbers (check the bot phone # at https://www.google.com/voice/b/1#phones ).
That saves getting an email from Jolly Roger for each call from your contacts while still having unknown numbers evaluated.
Very nice! I’ll add that to the set up page. Please let me know if there are any other power-user tips for GV and thanks SO MUCH for using this service! Of course, let me know if you get any good calls.
Roger
It is great to see that other Jolly Roger subscribers are starting to make use of Google Voice integration. Great job Roger!
Google Voice also supports SMS, (texting) from the Google Voice portal or Hangouts, (if you opted to send and receive SMS from Hangouts.)
Thanks to this SMS feature you can still prepare for your landlubber line verification without using your mobile number, or if by chance you don’t have a mobile phone, don’t have a texting plan or lastly if your mobile number is not covered by your Jolly Roger subscription.
Just send the text that Rodger tells you to send in the first step of the setup process from your Google Voice portal, or Hangouts.
Thank you Scot! One think I have deduced about trying to activate from your own GV number using Hangouts. When you get the verification call from Google, if the code contains a 4, then your GV account thinks you’re trying to activate the recording feature. So it’s kind of confusing. Hopefully the “power users” that are trying to activate through hangouts will get it, but it can be a complicated mess to set up. Once done, it’s very cool though.
And if you use the “press * to transfer back to all other numbers” feature, then you can engage a Jolly Roger bot by pressing *. Again – there are a confusing amount of features. Feel free to suggest edits to the help page at http://www.jollyrogertelco.com/google-voice
Thanks Scot!
I had forgotten that the instructions mentioned the issue with getting a “4” as part of a verification code conflicting with the Recording (4) feature. You mentioned that Google Fi users could disable the Recording feature. There is a workaround for GV subscribers as well where they can temporarily disable the Recording (4), Switch (*), and Conferencing options for inbound calls. These three features are toggled on or off as a group on the Settings page, Calls tab.
It appears that Google Voice has changed again and now you cannot specify that a phone number is a “home” or “work” number. I got a short recording of Kim the Kraken talking to Google’s “fast pickup” detection today.
I can fix that! Send me a note so I can find your account. I can press 1 as soon as I answer.
Actually i should be able to find you. On my mobile at the moment. I’ll be at a pc soon…
Done. Sorry that took so long.
I get pretty much nothing but recordings of Fast Pickup Detection talking over the bot using Landlubber, I don’t think I have even scored even one real live call yet that has made it through to the bots. I am not sure what I have done wrong.
Oh I’m so sorry! I can fix that!
I just have to press 1 to accept the call. Google Voice requires this on some accounts. I found your account and enabled it!
Awesome, thanks!
